Troubleshooting

Introduction

This guide walks you through connecting your MCP-compatible AI assistant (such as Claude or ChatGPT) to your Bluestone PIM environment.

New to the MCP server? Read About the Bluestone PIM MCP server before configuring your connection.

Supported clients

The Bluestone PIM MCP server works with any client that implements the Model Context Protocol. Clients known to work include:

  • Claude Desktop and Claude Code

  • ChatGPT (with Developer mode enabled for custom MCP servers)

  • Cursor

  • Visual Studio Code (with MCP-enabled chat extensions)

  • Windsurf

  • Codex

  • Custom clients built on the MCP SDK

If your tool supports MCP, it can connect to Bluestone PIM.

What you need

  • An active Bluestone PIM organization.

  • Credentials issued by Bluestone PIM for the MCP server.

  • An MCP-capable client installed on your machine.

The server URL and credentials are provided by Bluestone PIM as part of onboarding to the MCP service. Contact your account manager or Bluestone PIM support if you do not have them yet.

Connect your client

Each client has its own configuration UI or file, but the setup follows the same pattern:

  1. Log into the environment you want connected to the MCP server.

  2. Create a custom connector/plugin.

  3. Add the correct server link based on the relevant environment:

    Env. Technical documentation Server URL
    Test https://docs.api.test.bluestonepim.com/docs/bluestone-pim-mcp-connect-and-authenticate https://mcp-core-public.test.bluestonepim.com/mcp
    Prod EU https://docs.api.bluestonepim.com/docs/bluestone-pim-mcp-connect-and-authenticate https://mcp-core-public.bluestonepim.com/mcp
    Prod US https://docs.api-us.bluestonepim.com/docs/bluestone-pim-mcp-connect-and-authenticate https://mcp-core-public-us.bluestonepim.com/mcp

  4. If not already logged in, you will be prompted to authenticate.
  5. Save the configuration and restart or reload the client so it discovers the available tools.

Tip! You can find a list of all available tools in the Bluestone PIM MCP tool reference documentation.

  1. You can verify the connection by asking your assistant e.g. "list all available Bluestone PIM tools", or by running a simple query such as "list the first five products in my catalog".

First steps

Once connected, start with a few low-risk read requests to get familiar with the behaviour:

  • "How many products are in the Electronics category?"

  • "Show me products missing a description in French."

  • "What attributes are defined for the furniture family?"

  • "Which contexts are configured and what are their fallback contexts?"

When you move on to write operations, the assistant will describe the change and ask for confirmation before anything is modified.

Troubleshooting

Issue Suggestion
No tools appear after connecting. Check that the server URL and credentials are correct, and reload the client so it re-discovers the tools.
A specific tool is missing. It may not be enabled for your organization. Contact your Bluestone PIM administrator.
A request fails with a permissions error. The action is outside what your credentials allow in the platform. Permissions are enforced by the same model used in the Bluestone PIM UI.
A write operation is rejected with a validation error. Check the assistant's summary of the call. Context headers, attribute types, and required fields must match the Bluestone PIM schema - the assistant can usually correct itself if you point out the issue.
